Lost Girl Lap

Lost Girl Lap

Becca walks into Ulysses, armed for battle with a gold dress and red heels. She is on a mission tonight and she has to stand out. She knows she is beautiful but rarely feels the need to show it off to this degree. But tonight’s no ordinary night.

"Wow you look hawttttt," says Rachel, her best friend, as Becca walks to their table. Two other girls—both rather inconsequential to this story—are sitting at the table.
"Thanks, how's the crowd in here?"
"A lot of suits, feel like you're going to kill here."
"I plan on it."

Becca engages in pleasantries for a few minutes while the server brings her a drink. She isn't always so short with her friends, but again, tonight’s no ordinary night. She takes her drink in her hand and rises from her seat.

"I'm going to do a lost girl lap," says Becca as she leaves the table.

"A what?" asks Rachel to the rest of the table.

Ulysses is a large bar with two major sections. A secondary large room has a bar to the far side and a band playing on a stage. This is the fun room. But the main room contains a large rectangular bar right in the middle, with patrons stationed on all four sides. In all of Manhattan, there is no better bar to do a literal "lap."

Becca puts a whimsical but confused look on her face and starts walking. She doesn't make it 10 steps before a guy looks over his shoulder from the bar and is stunned into approaching.

"Carly?" says the boy that was far too young for her.
"Huh?" replies Becca.
"Did we go to school together? I could swear you look just like my friend Carly."
"Nice try kid." She taps him on the shoulder and continues her lap.

As she turns the corner, she sees a group of men in suits. Perfect. The entire group looks at her. As she continues walking with her patented confused look, one of the men approaches.

"Is everything okay?" asks the man.
"Oh yes, I was just looking for my friends."
"Oh...might I say you look absolutely radiant tonight."

Bingo. Becca converses with the man, and after a while, he forgets all about why she is there in the first place. As it turns out this man, Sebastian, is not only handsome and charming, he also happens to be a premier hotelier in New York City. A stone cold 10. Brilliant.

"Aren't you going to ask me to dance?" asks Becca.

Within moments, he whisks her off to the fun room where the party is in full swing. She dances with Sebastian and can’t help but notice how well he moves. Slowly but surely, she brings him over to the bar. As they approach, Becca sees him through the corner of her eye. Josh, in all his glory, exactly where she knew he would be.

"You are simply the most exquisite man that I have ever met," says Becca as she puts her arms around Sebastian's neck.

He wastes no time and kisses her. When the kiss breaks, Becca looks Josh's way, but he's gone.

Josh, in a state of pure rage, storms out of the fun room. He still can’t believe his eyes. He makes his way to Becca's table, where only Rachel is sitting down, on her phone.

"What the fuck is she doing here?!" asks Josh.
"Hello, Joshy. Top of the mornin to ya," replies Rachel.
"I don't have time for jokes, what's she doing here?"
"Who? Becca? She wanted to come out."
"So you bring her here?"
"Yeah, why not, we were all going to be here tonight."

"I...I just don't get why she's here. And with that...that...squid!"
"That guy's pretty hot. Also, what's it to you? You don't even like her?"
"I know!"
"You had your shot. You turned her down, remember?"
"I know! Don't you think I know! We would never be happy together, she's the worst."
"So, what's the problem?"
"Her! She's the problem. Ugh!"

Josh takes the lone drink in front of him (Rachel's), chugs it, and storms out of Ulysses. Rachel can't help but laugh.

"Awww poor bebe."

In the other room, Becca continues to woo Sebastian. He’s eating right out of the palm of her hand. Just as things start to escalate beyond control, Becca ends the encounter. She gives Sebastian her number and promises she'd let him take her out the following week. She kisses him on the cheek and makes her way out of the fun room, back to her table. This time, instead of a confused look on her face there is simply a smile.

"Did he see me?" she asks.
Rachel nods. Mission complete.
